The Balvenie Whisky Tasting

Tuesday 16 February 2010

Find out more about The Elms

Shrove Tuesday was certainly one of Indulgence for the 40 members and friends who gathered at The Elms to be inspired by the artisan craft of whisky making so passionately explained to us by Andy Forrester.

Andy led us through a tasting of five different ‘expressions’ of The Balvenie each of which shows the influence of a different type of maturation in the barrel which brings about its unique character.  A wealth of background information was weaved in amongst the tasting and many questions, covering the history of the distillery and the artisan crafts which are being supported by The Balvenie from floor malting, through coppersmithing and coopering all of which show inspiring commitment to traditional crafts and the ‘community’ which supports whisky production.

It was great to share this event with our friends from The Ludlow Marches group.   There were one or two converts to whisky amongst the audience, but even those who still don’t get the buzz were fascinated by the facts and fantasy inspired by the tasting.

Chef Daren Bale at The Elms laid on a great supper for us to end the evening  and there was much discussion about food and whisky matching, ideas for future whisky events and possible visits to Dufftown.  Watch this space!
