Originally planned for 6 May, when it finally took place, the asparagus tasting was once again a very successful event.  Following the weeks of cold, wet and cloudy weather there was finally asparagus to be tasted.

Judy Goodman first showed us the asparagus beds in different stages of development - those that are currently being picked, and some much younger beds which will still take a couple of years before coming into production.  The Walsgrove team also showed us the equipment they use to help them as they handpick each spear, and after the tour of the fields the washing, grading and bundling process was also explained.

Finally Judy and Michael treated us to a feast of asparagus - barbecued, steamed, pan fried, griddled, cold -  a splendid affair which was accompanied by wine from Astley Vineyard, just round the corner .  The Madeleine Angevine which Jonty Daniels had recommended went perfectly with the asparagus.

Thanks to Judy for hosting us so splendidly.  Remember to order your goose and turkey from her later in the year!

For more information on Astley Vineyard call Janet or Jonty on 01299 822907 - or watch this website for further information - we’re hoping to arrange a visit later in the year!
